New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) representatives recently met with University of Auckland academics to discuss Tiwai Point’s innovative aluminium production processes and explore future trends in industrial engineering –  including robotics, AI, and carbon reduction. The engaging discussion sparked enthusiasm for potential collaborations through student projects.

The meeting brought together Matt Black (Manager, Casting and Logistics), Steve MacDonald (Manager, Reduction), and Darren Schwass (Project Manager) from NZAS, with Professors Bruce MacDonald, Andy Philpott, Brent Young, Xun Xu, and Dr Jan Polzer from the Faculty of Engineering and Design, as well as Professor Emilson Silva and Ella Zhang from the Business School.

Following this, a team from the University visited NZAS’ Invercargill plant last week. Hosted by Steve MacDonald and Simon King, the group enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the facility, gaining deep insights into its processes and challenges. During a productive brainstorming session, the teams identified several student project topics to enhance NZAS’s production processes, with both sides excited about a long-term partnership.
